Nerd Out Marketing Your Business
I was recently doing a market interview, part of a reciprocal agreement with a new business owner. She got to talking about spreadsheets, and goal tracking, and started throwing in a few project managements terms like resource allocation and Gantt charts. Then she stopped herself and, laughing a little, apologized for nerding out.
I told her I loved it when people nerd out. Especially authentic business owners.
Nerding out about something you love is part of what makes you *you*. You’re unique and no one, no one, has your exact gifts and talents, unique experiences and passions. And expressing it in your business and your marketing is what helps to set you apart from other people in your field, doing similar types of work as you.
It’s a win-win-win strategy.
First of all, you get to talk about something you love. You can find ways to tie it into your business and your content. How fun and creative is that?
Second, your audience gets to learn more about you. And that helps make you into more of a real person to your prospective clients. You’re more rounded and authentic, which is so, so important in the world of online marketing.
Authenticity is magnetic. When you’re authentic in your marketing, and freely sharing your essence, people can sense your genuineness and are more willing to trust you. That’s part of what helps people move from merely liking what you posts and talk about you to being more willing to trust you as someone who can help them with their problem.
And finally, here’s where the bit of magic comes in, nerding out about something can help draw your ideal clients to you.
How?
Let’s say you’re organizing a celebration for some extended family, and you’re looking at a local event space. You’ve done some initial research and have narrowed it down two companies that appear very similar. They have similar sized meeting spaces, similar pricing. They’re both rated the same on Google or Yelp. You’re not sure which one to look more closely at, and perhaps book a tour, when you happen to notice on the About Page of one of the locations.
The owner talks about her passion for restoring natural habitats and about how planting new trees can help to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air. She talks about how she donates a portion of her personal earnings to reforestation projects. She goes on to mention how she’s planted seven new species of trees in her own backyard, creating a play space for her young toddlers to explore. She believes that, in addition to bringing people together, making intentional efforts towards increasing biodiversity make this world a better place.
And, let’s say, you minored in botany in college. Or had a favorite outdoor play space as a child? Or have always felt a special connection to trees as you spend time in nature…
Which location are you more likely to call up and ask for more information on? You get where I’m going here. Of course, booking an event space is different than hiring someone for healing, coaching or other transformational work, but the starting point is the same.
People feel more comfortable buying from those they feel they have genuine common ground with.
So, if you love knitting, find a way to bring it into your business somehow or your content as a metaphor. If your passionate about poetry or pledging support for your local shelter, tell us about them in your stories. If you love, Trevor Noah, Taylor Swift (ahem) or T.S. Elliot then talk about them too.
Go ahead, nerd out. It makes your marketing more fun, and the world need sway more of that. It helps people get to know you better as you show up more authentically in your marketing. And it helps draw your ideal clients to you.
What’s not to love?
